Of all the feelings that can keep us awake at night, few are as strong as that feeling of not having been quite good enough. That you should have got more done. You should have handled things better. You should have been a little more on top of it all. And now, here you are. Tired enough to sleep, but that feeling is keeping you from sleep. And if you know that feeling, you're not the only one. You're not even close. A lot of us grew up with someone keeping score.A parent who noticed the 1B on the report card and not the A. A teacher who pointed out what you got wrong long before they noticed what you got right. And so we learned early that falling short meant something was wrong with us. And that doesn't go away because we grew up.It's just that now, it sounds like your own voice in your own head at 11 at night. And then there's the comparisons. You know, you open up your phone for two minutes and somehow end up watching someone's kitchen renovation or someone else's marathon time or their Tuesday, which looks nothing like your Tuesday. And what you're not seeing is all the takes it took to get that perfect video or the argument that happened before the camera came out. You're comparing your actual life to somebody else's highlight reel. And of course, you're going to come up short. And a lot of us picked up somewhere along the way that being busy is the same thing as being good. That if you're not constantly doing something, achieving something, producing something, you're falling behind or worse, you're lazy. And put all of that together and you get what you feel sometimes. It's not really even sadness, it's just kind of a low hum of discontent, like you didn't quite measure up. But that feeling is not evidence of anything. It's never once been right. Not about you and not about anyone. Nobody is achieving at the level that voice thinks you should be. The people who look like they do are just better at hiding the parts that don't fit the picture. So if the voice has never once been a reliable judge of anything, maybe tonight we should stop taking its word for it. Because it's very hard to fall asleep while you're being judged, even if it's just by yourself. We're going to tell that voice that you did enough and that there's no one else standing in the spot you're standing in right now, doing what only you can do.And that alone should be enough to feel proud. And then we're going to help you sleep. But before we start, our usual reminder to be somewhere safe when listening and preferably in your comfortable bed and not anywhere you need to stay alert. And if this show has ever helped you, consider hitting follow. It means the next time you need it, it's right there waiting for you. And hypnotherapy tends to work better the more familiar it becomes.Like a well-worn path is easier to walk on than a new one. So following isn't just about finding me again. It's actually part of what makes this work. But now, let's get you settled. Find your way into your comfortable bed properly tonight. Not by just lying down, but arranging yourself.Move your pillow if it needs moving. Shift your weight until your body tells you it's found the spot it wants. There's no rush. Most of the day moves, even when you're sitting still. Your mind is moving. A screen in front of you.Conversation running in your head. Real stillness is rare. But it's here now.In this bed. In this dark. Feel your breath moving in and out. The way you'd notice rain against a window. And as you rest here, I'd like you to become very aware of your body. The way you would feel warm water or cool air for most of the day. Your body is just the thing carrying your head around. It runs in the background while your mind does all the talking. But tonight, let's reverse that.Let's really notice what's happening in our body. Start with your face. Notice your forehead. Not what it's doing, but just where it is. Let it smooth out. Let those little muscles release whatever they've been holding since this morning.Be aware of your eyes. They no longer need to focus on anything. In your jaw, notice how much of the day's tension collects right there in the jaw.And let that awareness travel down into your neck. Feel where it meets your shoulders. And then let your shoulders fall. Feel that release travel out along your arms, down through your elbows, into your forearms, and finally, into your hands. When your arms and your hands are relaxed, bring your attention to your chest. Feel it rise and fall and rise again somewhere in there.Your heart is doing its steady work, slower now than it was an hour ago. It's been quietly listening to you breathing this whole time. And it takes its cues from your breathing, slowing down.Your mind spends most of its life believing it's in charge, that it decides how you feel. And the body just goes along for the ride. But it runs the other way too.A body that is tense sends the brain a message that something's wrong. And a body that is slow and heavy and calm sends the opposite message, right now. Simply by lying here and letting your body settle, you're telling your own mind that it's safe.So let that awareness move down through your back now, one section releasing after another, all the way down your spine, down through your hips, down through your thighs, your calves, your ankles, all of it growing heavier and more still in your feet. Last of all, most days you probably couldn't tell me where your shoulders end and your neck begins or what your hands are doing while your mind is somewhere else entirely. But right now, you can feel all of it, every part of you, at once, quiet and accounted for.Just wait for that quiet and warmth and breath moving the way it's always moved, whether you were paying attention or not. And I want your attention now fully on my voice. Just let my words be the one thing you're following, the way you would follow a single thread through a dark room.If your mind drifts and it might, that's all right. Just let it find its way back to me when it's ready. I'm going to tell you a different kind of story tonight, one way of understanding everything that had to happen, every single accident and near miss, just so you could end up exactly here, in this bed, listening to these words tonight. And by the end of it, you'll understand something that voice in your head has never once gotten right, that you are exactly as you're meant to be. Not because of anything you did or didn't do today, but just because you're here. And let's begin.Picture it with me in your imagination. Not just an idea, but as something you can actually see. A cloud, wider than anything you could measure, hanging in a darkness, so complete, there was nothing yet to compare it to.It's not empty though. Cloud is full of dust, fine as smoke and gas, a deep, cold, blue-gray gas, just drifting. And then so slowly, you couldn't even really measure it in an entire lifetime.Small grains of that dust begin to lean toward each other, nothing reaching out and pulling them. It's just that mass finds mass, the way anything heavy finds its way towards anything else heavy, if you give it enough time. Grain finds grain, and then the grains become flecks, and the flecks become clumps, tumbling slowly, gathering more of the cloud around themselves as they go.The way a snowball gathers snow, except this snowball is made of the actual material of everything that would ever exist. At the center, where the most is gathered, the pressure grows. Atoms crush so close together, they have nowhere left to go but into each other until something gives, and the whole clump lights up from the inside. It's not a spark, not a flicker, it's an ignition that doesn't go out, and that is our sun, waking up for the first time, throwing off a light that hadn't existed before. And around it, smaller leftover pieces keep circling, cooling as they go, hardening from gas into rock, into something that you could stand on if you existed yet, to stand. And one of those pieces settles into an orbit that is really almost impossibly lucky, close enough to the new sun to stay warm, but far enough not to burn. And on its surface, water that arrived from who knows where, comets maybe, the water pools instead of boiling away or freezing solid, silver water, catching the light of a sun still young enough to burn a little too bright. Our planet, still bare, still just rock and steam and gray water under a sky with no clouds in it yet. And in that water, something happens that still doesn't have a good explanation.Simple strings of chemistry floating loose, begin holding in on themselves again and again, until one of them holds its shape long enough to be called something, a single cell, its edges barely holding it together against the water pressing in from every side. It doesn't know it's alive, it just keeps holding its shape and then impossibly makes a second one, just like it. And from there, time passes and cells join cells, shapes, growing fins, growing scales, during the first push towards something like a spine and somewhere in a shallow warm sea, ringed by soft green weeds and a shoreline, a fish comes right up to the edge of the water. Maybe the shallows have gotten crowded, or the tide has pulled back further than usual, leaving a stretch of wet sand and tide pools glittering under the light. Or maybe, on that one particular day, the air just smelled like something worth investigating.Whatever it was, that fish pushed itself up onto its fins, and it went back the next day. And the day after that, fins learned to hold weight, learned to stand upright, and look around, and start wondering about the sky it was standing under. And eventually, there were people. There were so many of them. And every single one had to survive and meet someone and stay long enough for it to matter. Or our story stops right there.Voices joining other voices. Around fires, you can almost hear crackling. In languages nobody speaks anymore.People teaching each other how to do things. Start a fire. Mend a net.Find water. Knowledge passed down a line. All the way.Down. To you. Think about how thin that thread really is.A man who might have gone fishing one morning instead of joining a raiding party because his knee hurt, and so he lived, when many others didn't. A woman on a walk one morning deciding, for no reason, to turn east instead of west. And then she met someone there that she never would have met on another path. A knight. When the moon came up all in silver over a field, bright enough to see by. Letting two people find their way home safely instead of losing each other in the dark. These people were just living their one ordinary day. But every single one of those ordinary days had to go a very specific way. Unbroken. For thousands of years. Without a single exception. Or you would not be here. And yet, here you are. Every accident. Every near miss.Every small, ordinary decision had to happen. For millions of years. Without a single failure. So that you, specifically you, lying exactly where you are right now, could exist. At all. So when that voice in you tonight says you didn't measure up.That you should have done more. Been more. I'd like you to remember what it took just to get you into this bed tonight.A star. A planet at exactly the right distance. Thousands of people loving each other and staying alive long enough to pass you down the line. All of it unbroken. All the way to you. And every small thing that you've been carrying tonight. The two pounds. The dishes. The wrong word yesterday. The hundred other small failures that the voice likes to list off right when you're trying to rest. None of it was ever going to be the measure of you. Next to a star.Next to an unbroken chain of people who somehow survived long enough to bring you here. Those things are smaller than dust. You are not required to do one more thing tonight to be enough. You already are existing right now in this exact bed. Having made it through this exact day is the whole requirement. You've already met it.That voice. The one who keeps score. The one that noticed the B and not the four A's.The one that thinks busy and good are the same word. It was taught to you somewhere along the way. Someone handed it to you. Maybe without meaning to. And you picked it up because you were young and didn't know you had a choice. But anything that was taught can be untaught.Anything you learned this well, you can learn to set down just as well. Not all at once. Just a little tonight.A little tomorrow. Until one day it's quiet. More often than it's loud. And so much easier to sleep once that voice goes quiet. Sleep was never really about the body giving up. Your body's been ready for sleep for a while now. It's about the mind finally agreeing to stop judging. So let yourself come all the way back now. Back from the stars.Back from the shallow water. Back from all those people. Around all those fires.Back into this room. This bed. It's dark. Feel how good this darkness actually is. It's not empty. It's not frightening. Just soft and close and yours. Wrapped around each person who's ever needed it. Every night. For as long as there have been beds and tired bodies to fill them. Feel the quiet too. Really feel it.However much sound is actually in your room right now. The hum of something electrical. The saddle of the building.Or nothing at all. Just notice how it isn't asking anything of you. It's just here. The way you're just here. Both of you allowed to simply exist without explaining why. Your bed knows the shape of you by now.The mattress has softened into you. The blanket has found its place across your shoulders. Your pillow is holding your head exactly where it wants to be held.Nothing here is waiting on you to be different than you already are. You did enough today. You are enough tonight. And that is the last thing you need to know before you sleep.
