You're awake. And it's what? 3 a.m.? Later? Earlier? You managed to get to sleep. And then something woke you.Maybe it was a noise. Or you had to use the bathroom. Maybe it was nothing at all.And now you're wide awake. All right. This is fixable.I know it doesn't feel like it right now. You've been lying here trying, and nothing's been working. And you're probably starting to feel a little anxious. But believe it or not, your body wants to go back to sleep. The sleep drive is still there. We just need to help your remember how to let go.And we're going to do that together. Right now. This episode is a little different.I'm going to skip most of my usual preamble and get straight to helping you fall back asleep. I would normally remind you to make sure you're somewhere safe to listen. But since you just woke up, I'm assuming you're still in bed.If you are driving an 18-wheeler down the highway right now, that's really weird and unsafe. So stop listening. Also, we're not going to get into all the reasons why you just woke up.There are many possible reasons. If you're curious, I've listed them on my social media. But tonight, right now, it's just about getting you back to sleep. We're going to start with something called stimulus control. It's one of the most effective techniques in sleep science. The idea is that your bed should be strongly associated with sleep. But right now, after lying here awake and getting frustrated, your bed is starting to feel like a place of wakefulness, a place of anxiety. We need to break that association. So if your bed feels hot, rumpled, or like you've been wrestling with your blankets, get up for a moment. Shake out your sheets. Flip your pillow to the cool side. If you're too warm, open a window or turn on a fan.Just make sure that your bed feels fresh again. This small physical reset signals to your brain that we're starting over. And if you want to do that, hit pause now. I'll be here when you get back. And if your bed already feels pretty comfortable and fresh, just settle in where you are. And before we go any further, I need you to stop thinking about time.I know you've been calculating how many hours and minutes are left until morning. Stop. It will take as long as it takes.Worrying about how long it's taking only makes it take longer to let go of the clock, let go of tomorrow. There is only right now. And right now, you're safe.Feel where you are. Feel the mattress underneath you, holding your weight. You don't have to hold yourself up.The bed is doing that. Feel your pillow, the way it supports your head and neck. Feel the covers over you, their weight, their warmth.Notice how your body feels right now. Lying here, the slight pressure of the mattress against your back, your hips, your legs, the way the blanket rests on your chest. You're in your own bed and let yourself feel held by it.And if you're comfortable, let's begin with your breathing. There's a nerve that runs from your brain. Down through your chest, called the vagus nerve. And when you exhale slowly, longer than you inhale, you activate that nerve. It sends a signal to your brain that you're safe. You can rest. Your heart rate slows. Your blood pressure drops. Your whole system begins to feel calm. So breathe in now, through your nose or through your mouth. Just a comfortable breath in. And then breathe out slowly.Make it longer than the inhale. And again, breathe in, filling your lungs. And then out.A long and slow exhale. One more time. In and out. Let everything go with that breath. Now just let your breathing settle into its own rhythm. You don't need to control it anymore. And close your eyes if they're not already closed. I'd like you to imagine that you're somewhere else now. Somewhere far from your bedroom. Far from this night. You're standing at the edge of a hidden grotto. A cave opening. An ancient rock. The area is different. Warmer.Still. You can hear water. Not waves or rushing.Just the quietest lapping sound. Water moving against stone. And underneath that silence, you step closer to the entrance. And as you do, you see a soft blue glow coming from inside the cave. Just a gentle luminescence. Like moonlight, but bluer.Calmer. You move toward the entrance. The cave wraps around you. The ceiling arches high overhead. Dark volcanic rock, smooth from centuries of water moving against it. The air smells clean, like salt and stone. And below you, you see a pool. Filling the floor of the grotto is a pool of water. The water itself is luminous. You can see it sparkling with tiny points of light. This is bioluminescent water. The water is warm. And it's dense. Mineral rich. Like the Dead Sea.Water that will hold you completely. You move to the edge. And you step in.Your foot touches the surface. The water is cool. Not cold, but refreshing.Exactly what your body needs right now. You step down further. The water rises to your ankles, your calves, and everywhere the water touches your skin. It glows brighter. Soft blue light dancing around your legs. The bioluminescence responds to your presence. And you can feel the water holding you. Supporting you. With almost no effort on your part, you wade in further. The water rises to your knees, your thighs, your hips. The blue glow moves with you. Surrounding you in soft light. And now you can feel what the minerals in this water are doing. Your muscles are already beginning to release. The tension in your legs is dissolving in the water. The water reaches your waist, your stomach, your chest. And now you can lean back. And you let the water take your weight. You're floating now. Completely held. Your arms drift out to your sides.Your legs relax and rise slightly. The water is so dense. So mineral rich. That you cannot sink. You are fully suspended. Lying here is so effortless. So safe. The water begins its work now. You can feel it happening in your feet first. The arches. The small bones. The muscles that have been walking. Standing. Carrying you through the day. The cool, mineral rich water is moving through them. Not just around them. But into them. Feel that tension.Releasing. Your feet feel heavier. Looser.Like they're melting into the water. The sensation moves upward into your ankles. Your calves. Those muscles that tighten when you're stressed. When you're bracing against something. Feel them loosening now.The fibers unwinding. The water is pulling the tension out. Into your knees now.The joints that hold so much. And your thighs. The largest muscles in your body. The quadriceps. The hamstrings. They've been working hard. And now they're being given permission to rest. Feel the water moving through them. Feel your legs growing heavier.Sinking deeper into the water's hold. The water reaches your hips. Your lower back. And the muscles along your spine. The small stabilizers that work constantly to keep you upright. Feel them releasing now.Your spine is lengthening. Your hips are opening. The water is holding you so completely that these muscles don't need to work anymore.Feel the water against your stomach now. This is where anxiety lives in your body. The tight, hollow feeling that belongs to 3am and nowhere else. The water is moving through it. Cool. Soothing.Feel your belly softening. Your breathing deepening. The knot that's been sitting there is dissolving. The water rises to your chest. And your rib cage. And here, let me tell you what's happening.Your diaphragm. The dome-shaped muscle that sits below your lungs has been working in short, shallow movements. Because you've been anxious. When you're stressed, your diaphragm can't fully descend. And your breath stays high in your chest. But now, as this muscle relaxes, as the water moves through it, your diaphragm can drop fully with each inhale. And your breath can deepen. And deeper breathing tells your entire nervous system, we are safe. Feel it now.Your chest is expanding more fully. The water continues upward into your shoulders. And your shoulders have been carrying everything. Not just the physical weight of your arms, but the invisible weight of stress, of responsibility, of whatever kept you awake tonight. Your trapezius muscles, large muscles that run from your neck out to your shoulders, are probably tight right now. They pull upward when you're tense, drawing your shoulders toward your ears.Feel the water reaching those muscles. Feel them releasing their grip. Your shoulders are dropping, settling down, away from your neck. Heavy and loose. Down your arms now. Your upper arms.Your elbows. Your forearms. The water glowing blue all around them.Into your wrists. Your hands. Your fingers. Every small joint, relaxing. Your hands are open now. Palms up.Floating on the surface of the water. Completely still. And now your neck. The back of your neck, where tension gathers. The sides. The front. The water is moving through all of it. Your head is floating. And you feel almost weightless.Your head is heavy, but the water is holding it. You don't have to hold yourself up at all. And finally, your face.Your jaw. The muscle that controls your jaw is the strongest muscle in your body. Pound for pound.People clench their jaws when they're anxious, when they're frustrated, when they're trying to sleep and can't. Feel the water now, moving through your jaw, loosening, softening, the muscles around your mouth soften, those tiny muscles around your eyes, your forehead, every muscle in your face is letting go. The water has moved through your entire body now, from the tips of your feet to the crown of your head. Every muscle has released, every joint is loose, you are floating in this glowing blue water, you are held, you are safe and still, you feel so light now. All the tension from your day is dissolved, and what is left is as light as a feather, as light as air, as loose as water lapping against the smooth cave walls, everything completely relaxed. The blue glow surrounds you like a cocoon of light, and above you, the cave ceiling arches into darkness. You can see the faintest sparkle there, minerals in the rock, catching the water's glow. This water is ancient, healing, and it knows where tension lives, and you're floating now. Your arms drift out to your sides, your legs relax and rise slightly, the water is so dense, so mineral-rich, that you cannot sink, you are suspended. The blue glow surrounds you, every small movement you make, a finger flexing, your chest rising with your breath creates gentle ripples, and each ripple carries light, blue spreading outward in rings, and then fading back to stillness. You let your head tip back, and your ears slip just below the surface, sound changes, the world above becomes muffled and distant, underwater. You can hear your own heartbeat, slow, steady, you look up, the cave ceiling arches high above you, dark volcanic rock, smooth and curved, like the inside of a shell, there are thin veins of crystal running through the stone, quartz maybe, or something else that catches the blue light from the water, and holds it. And then you see an opening, a natural skylight, in the roof of the cave, where the rock has worn away over millennia, through it, you can see the night sky, real stars, hundreds of them, impossibly bright, because there's no light pollution here, wherever here is, and as you watch, a streak of light crosses the opening, a shooting star, gone, in an instant, moonlight spills through the opening, pale silver mixing with the blue glow of the water, it catches on something growing at the edge of the pool, night, blooming jasmine, its small white flowers just visible in the shadows, releasing its scent, sweet, clean, the smell of night gardens and summer air, water drips somewhere, you hear it now, a steady rhythmic sound, from a higher ledge where moisture has collected, drops fall into the pool, each one creating its own small circle of light, as it disturbs the glowing water, the sound is hypnotic, regular as a clock, but softer, natural, the blue glow around you is steady now, pulsing so gently, you can barely see it, and your breathing has slowed, each breath is deep, your chest rises, your chest falls, the water rises and falls with you, above you, through the opening in the cave, the stars are still there, bright and cold and impossibly far away, but you are here, warm, floating, held, another drop of water falls from the ledge above, it hits the surface near your hand, a small circle of blue blooms and fades, the sound is so regular, so rhythmic, like a heartbeat, you could stay here, forever, floating in this dark grotto, the cool water, the blue light, the stars overhead, nothing you have to do, nowhere, you have to be, just this, just floating, just breathing, and if sleep doesn't come right away, that's okay too, it's not the end of the world, even though it feels like it, at 3 a.m., you will still function tomorrow, maybe not at your absolute best, but you'll manage, you've done it before, you've gotten through days on less sleep than this, and you survived them, you always do, and I promise you, you will sleep again, maybe in 10 minutes, maybe in an hour, maybe it will be tomorrow night, but sleep will come, it always does, your body needs it, and your body knows how to find it, so if tonight is difficult, be patient with yourself, rest is still rest, even when sleep feels so far away, but now your eyes are heavy, keep them closed, the blue light is still there, behind your eyelids, soft, flowing, slowly fading, the jasmine scent drifts across the water, so faint now, almost gone, and the stars are there, even though your eyes are closed, you know they're there, your breathing is slow, and deep, the water is holding you, always holding you, sleep is so close now, you can feel it at the edges, welcoming, soft, dark, you don't have to reach for it, it's coming to you, the way the water came to you, the way the blue light came to you, it's here, all around you, let go now, let the water hold everything, let the darkness come, you are floating, and you are safe, sleep is here now, in the water, in the darkness, in the quiet rhythm of your breathing, and you don't need the grotto anymore, you don't need the blue light, or the stars, or the jasmine, they've done their work, and now they're fading, becoming part of the darkness, part of the sleep that's already pulling you under, and you're back, in your own bed, but you're still floating, the mattress beneath you is the water, the blankets over you, are the cool night air, you are home, there's nothing left to do now, nothing left to think about, nothing left to worry about, the night will pass, morning will come, and you will meet it rested, sleep now, deep and dreamless, the way you sleep, when you're floating in dark water, under a sky, full of stars.
