I think we all in some ways steal little bits of happiness from ourselves. I have this habit of thinking in a way that drives people who are close to me crazy and I'm not even sure where it came from. But when something good happens to me, something that should make me genuinely happy, I'll immediately start looking for reasons to doubt it.I'll downplay a compliment, find reasons to be skeptical about this good thing, or convince myself it won't last. And I guess it's my way of protecting myself from disappointment. But it also robs me of being truly happy. And I am working on changing that pattern, trying to let myself enjoy joy when it shows up. I think I'm making progress and I know I'm not alone in this. We all have ways of thinking that let happiness slip right through our fingers. And sometimes these are the same thinking patterns that follow us into bed at night and keep us awake. Tonight we're going to explore some of those patterns and discover how much control we actually have over our own contentment. We'll guide you into the deep restorative sleep your mind and body need to wake up feeling more optimistic and open to the good things that are waiting for you.But first, please make sure you're somewhere safe to fall asleep. This episode uses hypnotherapy techniques designed to guide you into deep sleep. And thank you to everyone who follows the show. You make me very happy. And I will work hard to enjoy that happiness and not convince myself you're going to unfollow me tomorrow. Please don't do that. And if you haven't followed yet, please consider it. It's like building a little library of sleep solutions. Now let's prepare your body for the deep restorative sleep that will reset your mind and open you to more happiness. We're going to guide you through a progressive relaxation that will release tension, allowing you to sink into comfort and peace. So make sure you're comfortable. Bluff up your pillow if you need to. Turn the lights out if they're not already. And if you're someone who likes the blankets tucked around you, do that now. And together with me, take a deep breath in all the way down to your belly and then out with a beautiful long exhale. And now bring your attention to your face. Notice all those tiny muscles around your eyes and mouth and let them soften. Let them relax.Feel your eyelids becoming heavy and peaceful. Notice your jaw. If it's tense, let those muscles soften. Now your neck and your shoulders, places where stress often manifests physically. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Any knots of tension in your neck begin to unravel as you continue those lovely, long, deep breaths.Move your awareness down to your arms and hands. Unclench your hands if they're tight. With each breath, any remaining tension in your arms and hands dissolves.Notice your back against the mattress. Any areas of tightness or tension are invited to release. And as you rest here in complete comfort, I want you to bring your full attention to the sound of my voice.Let my words become the gentle current that carries you deeper into this peaceful state. Allow everything else to fade into the background. The sounds of the day, the chatter in your mind, even your awareness of the room around you. There's only my voice now, weaving through your thoughts. Trust that my voice knows exactly where to take you. Each word I speak will help you let go a little more, to sink a little deeper, move closer to that perfect state where sleep comes naturally and easily.Your life is a lot like an ocean, a vast open expanse that you're constantly navigating. Sometimes you're sailing toward a new job, a different relationship, a goal you've set for yourself. Sometimes it's just toward tomorrow, toward everything the next day will ask of you.Occasionally the way is clear sailing, calm waters, steady winds. Other times it's choppy, obscured by fog or storms, and you're feeling your way through darkness. This is where our visualization takes place tonight on the ocean of your life, under the most beautiful night sky you can imagine.Picture this ocean now, spreading endlessly in every direction around you. The water is so blue, it's almost black, but not threatening, peaceful like velvet. The surface moves with long gentle swells that catch the starlight. These are warm waters that make you think of tropical nights. Above you, the sky is brilliant with stars scattered like diamonds across the deep velvet of night. The moon hangs full and bright, casting a pathway of light across the water. The air is warm and soft, carrying a clean scent of salt and sea, with hints of something sweet from distant shores. The horizon curves away in every direction, limitless and full of possibility. This is your ocean, your life, your journey to navigate as you choose, because everyone needs a vessel to carry them safely.Let's imagine the boat that will take you wherever you need to go. A classic yacht, dull is sleek and beautiful, but painted a deep navy blue with elegant white trim. The yacht cuts cleanly through the swells without a sound, except for the soft whisper of water along the hull.Grass fittings catch the starlight, portholes glowing warmly from within. Now imagine yourself climbing the steps to the bridge, your hands trailing along the mahogany handrails. Wide windows curve around the entire space, offering a panoramic view of the star-filled sky.The helm station is positioned perfectly in the center, with the ship's wheel crafted from mahogany and brass, waiting for your hands. But what draws your attention most are the instruments surrounding you. This is a sophisticated navigation center, with gleaming dials and gauges and controls, arranged in elegant panels around the bridge. Each instrument helps you navigate, not just the waters, but the deeper currents of your own life. Maybe tonight you're navigating toward tomorrow, toward everything the next day will ask of you. Maybe you're heading toward a new opportunity.Maybe you're sailing toward or away from a relationship, or toward healing from something that's been weighing you down. Whatever your course, you're hoping to find some happiness, because that's what we're all seeking, isn't it? Happiness, those moments when life feels right and good and worth celebrating. You'd like to feel happiness each day, even if it's just in small doses. We all would. Walk now to the main instrument panel, where crucial gauges wait for your attention. These aren't just navigational tools, they're the internal settings that determine how much joy and contentment you'll be able to experience. The first gauge is labeled self-compassion, and right now the needle is pointing somewhere in the middle range. Not terrible, not optimal either. Place your hand on the dial and slowly turn it down.As you do, think about your own critical voice that's always pointing out your mistakes and shortcomings. Can you imagine saying some of the things you say to yourself, to a friend? We say these things to ourselves often, and they erode our sense of happiness, our confidence, our peace. As you adjust this dial, feel that critical voice growing quieter. You feel your shoulders releasing tension you didn't even know you were carrying. From this point on, you'll speak to yourself with more patience, more genuine kindness. You're amazing. Not perfect, but perfectly you. You deserve the same kindness you give to someone you love. You deserve that happiness. The second instrument measures present moment awareness. The needle has been flickering erratically because sometimes you're lost in worry about the future, or in regret about the past. Think about how rarely you're actually present in the moment. When you're eating breakfast, you're thinking about your to-do list. When you're talking to a friend, part of your mind is replaying a different conversation. When you're trying to fall asleep, you're anticipating tomorrow's challenges.Adjust this dial, and as you do, notice how much more vivid everything becomes. The gentle rocking of the boat, the warmth of the night breeze through the bridge windows. Tomorrow, you'll pay attention to the present things that bring happiness in so many small ways. The taste of your morning coffee, the warmth of sunlight, the satisfaction of a deep, full breath. Happiness isn't something you have to chase. When you're truly present, it's available right here. The third gauge reads acceptance. Not the kind of acceptance that means giving up, but the wisdom to know what you can change and what you can't. And this means accepting other people too.Stopping the exhausting effort to change your partner, your kids, your co-workers, your parents. Life becomes so much happier when you stop wishing someone else was different. They're on their own journey.Accept that your sister will always be late, that your friend processes emotions differently than you, and that your teenager is going to make mistakes as they figure out who they are. Turn this dial carefully until it settles in the sweet spot. Feel a wave of relief washing through your body as you let go of the exhausting effort to control everything around you.Your energy is better spent on the things you can actually influence. On thoughts that bring you happiness. The fourth and final instrument is maybe the most important.Permission to be human. This gauge has been running dangerously low because somewhere along the way you may have absorbed the message that you should be happy all the time, productive all the time, and perfect all the time. You don't have to be happy all the time. You don't have to be productive every moment, optimistic about everything. Sometimes you'll have days that you'll accomplish nothing. Sometimes you'll feel irritated by people you love or sad for no reason or just blah about life in general.Adjust this dial now and feel the tremendous relief as you give yourself permission to have off days, to feel frustrated sometimes, to be gloriously, imperfectly human. The needle swings into the range and you can almost feel your nervous system exhaling with relief as each gauge settles into its optimal position. Notice how much calmer you feel. The yacht seems to ride even more smoothly through the gentle waves. The stars overhead appear brighter and more welcoming. There's a sense of everything being in proper balance now.Not perfect but healthy and sustainable. Your instruments are calibrated now. Your course is set and you've committed to practicing these four essential elements of happiness. And you know as you sit on this beautiful bridge, surrounded by moonlight and possibility, happiness isn't really a destination you arrive at someday when everything lines up perfectly. Happiness is a state you can access right now in the life you already have. It exists in small moments, a text from someone you care about, the satisfaction of completing a task well, the feeling of clean sheets against your skin. You do deserve happiness. You deserve joy, contentment, moments of genuine pleasure and satisfaction. You deserve to notice when good things happen, even small ones. You deserve to feel proud of your efforts, even when the results aren't perfect. You deserve to experience the simple pleasure of being alive on this beautiful planet. So tomorrow you'll grab happiness where you can find it.You'll notice when it's happening, a moment of connection with another person, the satisfaction of a job well done, the pleasure of a meal you enjoy, or music that moves you, or the feeling of your body moving through space. These aren't consolation prizes while you wait for real happiness to arrive. These are happiness available to you right now.Feel yourself settling deeper into the captain's chair now, your hands resting lightly on the ship's wheel. The yacht moves steadily through the warm peaceful waters, rocking gently with each swell. The motion is hypnotic, soothing like being cradled in the most comfortable hammock while someone hums a lullaby.Listen to the peaceful sounds surrounding you, the gentle whisper of water along the hull, the distant sound of waves meeting some far-off shore. These sounds seem to match your breathing, which has grown slower and deeper without you even noticing. Each exhale releases a little more tension from your body.

The moonlight streaming through the bridge windows is soft and silver, painting everything with a dreamlike luminescence. The stars overhead pulse, as if they're breathing along with you. Your body feels perfectly supported, perfectly in tune with the gentle rocking motion of the yacht. Your shoulders are soft, your arms heavy and relaxed, your hands resting peacefully. This is what it feels like to be truly in control of your own happiness - not fighting against the currents of life, but learning to work with them. Not demanding that every day be perfect, but finding ways to appreciate the beauty that's available even on imperfect days. The warm ocean air continues to flow gently through the bridge, carrying the clean scent of salt and distant shores. Each breath fills your lungs, and as you exhale, you can feel yourself sinking deeper. Your heartbeat has slowed to match the gentle rhythm of the waves, and your thoughts have become soft and dreamlike. Let yourself drift now, as naturally as this elegant yacht drifts with the current. The ocean supports you completely, the stars guide you safely, and the gentle rocking motion carries you deeper and deeper into the most peaceful, restorative sleep. Tomorrow you'll wake with a clearer sense of your own navigation skills, more aware of the small pleasures available to you, more compassionate toward yourself as you continue this beautiful journey called your life.
