Some people go to bed, they turn out the light, and then they fall asleep. I know, it sounds almost mythical, doesn't it? And many of us used to be those people. But then something changed.Whether it was our minds or our bodies, sleep became elusive. For some of you, nights have become long stretches of time. You've likely tried countless remedies. But tonight, I'm inviting you to try something you may not have considered. Instead of trying to sleep, I invite you to simply join me in letting go. That's right, you don't need to try to sleep tonight. All I ask is that you allow your body to rest while your mind gently wanders with my voice. When this episode ends, the music will continue, allowing you to rest with eyes closed, breathing deeply, and just feeling the comfort of your bed. I'm assuming you're already in bed listening. As always, please ensure you're somewhere safe when listening to any of these episodes. Find a position that feels natural for your body right now. If you can, lay on your back and let your spine find its natural curve against the mattress. Let your shoulders melt downward. Notice your legs. They can be extended or slightly bent. If your lower back is talking to you, try placing a small pillow beneath your knees. As your body settles, wiggle your toes once and then let them be still, allowing that release to travel up through your feet and ankles. Now with your body positioned, bring your awareness to your breathing.Feel the natural rhythm of air moving in and out. Now let's try something called four seven eight breathing. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, hold that breath for seven, and exhale slowly through your mouth for eight. Let's try it together. In for four, one, two, three, four, hold, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and exhale for eight, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. And once more. In for four, hold for seven, and out for eight. Now I'd like to bring your attention to your body. Imagine, if you will, a soft glowing ball of light hovering just above the crown of your head. This light has a gentle warmth and a soothing quality. It's the color of pure relaxation, whatever that looks like to you. As this ball of light gently touches the top of your head, it begins to melt.Like soft moonlight entering your scalp, feel it softening the tiny muscles there, dissolving any tension you might be holding. The light seeps deeper, relaxing your forehead, and then continues its journey, glowing behind your eyes, releasing the delicate muscles there. The light moves to your jaw, an area where we often hold so much tension without realizing.Feel your jaw becoming heavy and loose. Down through your neck the light travels, dissolving knots of tension, rejuvenating tired cells. It spreads across your shoulders, melting away tightness, creating space between your shoulder blades. The healing light flows down your arms, into your elbows and wrists, and into each finger. Feel how your hands can rest completely. Now the light pools in your chest, surrounding your heart, infusing each breath with calm. The light expands through your abdomen, releasing any tightness there, allowing your breathing to deepen naturally. Down through your lower back, your hips, the light dissolves any discomfort, any tension. Your entire torso feels supported and heavy. The warm light continues its journey down your legs, through your knees and calves and ankles, and into your feet. Every muscle it touches releases. Your entire body is now infused with this gentle healing light, from the crown of your head to the tips of your toes.Your body knows how to rest, and your mind knows how to become quiet. Remember, sometimes the very act of thinking about sleep, worrying about it, is precisely what keeps it at bay. Sleep is a natural process, like breathing.Your body knows exactly how to do it, when you step out of the way, and let it happen. Even in the morning, if you feel you haven't slept at all, you might be wrong. Often, we drift in and out of light sleep without realizing it, and even this rest still has immense value for your mind and body. Tonight, if after a while you find yourself wide awake, it's perfectly okay to get up and do something quiet, until sleepiness returns. Learning to accept occasional sleeplessness without frustration is part of the cure. Sleep will come, in its own time, in its own way. I'm Suzanne, and this is your ticket to Snoozeville, wishing you the deepest, most peaceful sleep. Sleep now, sleep deeply, sleep well.
